How many calories do I need to lose weight?

Are you looking to drop a few pounds?  To loose a pound a week you must reduce your calorie count by 500 calories a day.  That equals 3500 calories a week, which is what one-pound equals…3500 calories.   Eating less, moving more or a combination can do this.  So you ask the questions:  How many calories do you need to maintain your current weight?  And how many do you need to loose weight? so you can reduce this amount to loose weight.

Many factors affect the rate your body burns calories: your age, size, how much muscle and how much fat you have and how active your are….oh and genetics.

There are many online tools such as CalorieCount.com that can help you calculate how many calories you need to maintain and loose weight.  Once this is determined you will have to choose a food plan and exercise program that can help you with your weight loss journey.

The chart below gives a general idea:

Activity Level Men (175 lbs) Women (140 lbs)
